Have you ever made your own granola bars?

They’re SUPER easy to make. Now that I’ve made my own, I’m never going back to store-bought granola bars.

Ok technically these Nature Valley ones are not vegan because they contain whey and honey but it was the best comparison for my homemade bars since they are both chewy and peanut buttery.

However, mine’s main ingredient is oats and theirs is peanuts, but they both contain oats, peanuts/peanut butter, and a sweetener (mine uses maple syrup or agave syrup). Order of ingredient on food labels matter because it’s the order of predominance – from highest to lowest quantity in the food.

The 2nd and 3rd ingredient (and 11th) for the store-bought one are both sugar! That’s a lot of added sugar. Yes maple syrup is a sugar but the glycemic index is lower than refined table sugar (and maple syrup does contain some minerals and antioxidants – though not a ton). However, replacing refined sugar with pure, quality maple syrup is likely to yield a net health benefit so if you need a sweetener, that’s my go-to.

If you want to try these granola bars they take just 5 ingredients and 5 minutes to make! Then just an hour to chill in the fridge so they set up. It couldn’t be easier!

And trust me – they are FILLING.
